Hay una nueva distribución de Linux que esta dando vueltas por la Red, llamada LinuxPeppermint. Peppermint apunta a ser una distribución para el nuevo paradigma del cloud computing (computación en la nube).
Linux Peppermint no viene con ningún programa típico, como cliente de correo, ofimática, etc. En vez de eso, viene con Mozilla Prism lo cual trae cualquier aplicación web a tu escritorio.
Gracias a Prism puedes acceder a GMail, GCalendar, Google Docs, etc. Tambien encontraras editores de audio e imágenes en versión Web, además de radios online tipo Last.Fm y Pandora. En realidad no extrañaras ninguna aplicación local.
La razón por la que Peppermint es rápido no es solo por que carece aplicaciones locales sino también por que sus características de escritorio están basadas en un ambiente liviano y rápido como Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment. Diseñado para la nube y netbooks.
En pocas palabras, Peppermint es rápido. El sistema se inicia y se apaga más rápido que otras distribuciones y todo la distro pesa algo de 408 Mb. Lo que lo hace ideal también para equipos viejos o de poco recursos.
Sin embargo, la idea de una distro de Linux que se liviana no es nada nuevo. De hecho, la porción de la nube de Peppermint no esta realmente integrada al sistema operativo en si, sino que todo recae sobre Prism.
La interfase tampoco tiene algo de especial, ya que esta basada en LXDE, en realidad dejando de lado LXDE y Prism se esta ante una distro típica de Linux, agradable a la vista.
Lo que hace especial a Peppermint es su rapidez y liviandad, por ejemplo para muchos Ubuntu y otras distros son muy pesadas para algún usuario ocasional de Linux. En especial si posees una PC o Laptop vieja o de poco recursos. Peppermint es una agradable distro, liviana y que trabaja muy bien con otras.
